I was pretty certain, but not one hundred percent, that they had not followed me, so I put the backpack on, put my jacket over the top and walked to my car. It wasn’t as hard as I thought to keep the front of my body facing the street. I opened the passenger door and took off my jacket and the backpack in one fell swoop, throwing them onto the floor. I sauntered around to the driver’s side, got in, and called Ebony.

‘Hi. If the traffic has died down, I should be there in about thirty minutes.’

Silence

‘Hello?’

‘I don’t think I want you to come over, Brad.’ Her voice had a determined timbre to it. Strong. Forceful.

‘Oh. Okay. I have your notebooks.’

More silence. This was nerve-wracking.

‘All right. But I don’t want you to stay the night.’

‘Sure,’ I said, pulling a face that not even a mother could love.
